Vintage material, cotton thread

Artist Statement:

“Home reflects my deep connection to the Deaf community, Deaf culture, and Auslan. Finding this piece of vintage material, I knew it was the right one to carry the Auslan sign for ‘home’.”

As she sewed, Sue recalled her first encounter with the Deaf community and learning Auslan at age 10 - a transformative experience that sparked a profound sense of belonging. Her journey with Deaf culture deepened over time, shaping her identity and sense of connection.

Sue later married a Deaf partner, and together they raised two children whose first language is Auslan. For Sue, both her family and the Deaf community are her home, intertwined as her chosen families.
