ARTIST STATEMENT
“Reflecting Mirror” is a short video artwork that invites us into the world of communication from several perspectives. It explores perception on many levels; how we view and experience the barriers of communication, how we perceive each other and how others perceive the world.
This artwork showcases how communication is integral and linked to identity and culture as well as how we view Deaf and hearing identities with a social connectedness context. This work simultaneously highlights the barriers we experience with personal connections but breaks them down by creating empathy with one another.
This video artwork consists of two Deaf and two hearing performers filmed while interpreting a poem written in English by the artist provided as a written script. The performers will be able to choose specific environments where they can feel free and safe to embody the poem and express it in their full potential.
